A St. Louis Icon
The Lofts at Lafayette Square building became a St. Louis landmark when it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984 due to the building’s rich history and beautiful features.
The historical past is evident as soon as residents walk into the beautifully preserved, yet updated space.
Roberts, Johnson and Rand
The building was erected in 1903 for the Roberts, Johnson and Rand Shoe Company, a shoe manufacturing company that later became the International Shoe Company in 1911. The five story brick industrial building was one of the first St. Louis factories specifically designed for shoe production.
St. Louis Heyday
St. Louis soon evolved from a distribution center for companies in the east to a booming manufacturing hub. The International Shoe Company emerged as the largest single shoe manufacturer in the country and was a major contributor to the St. Louis economy.
Theodore C. Link
This German-born American architect designed the building and is credited with over 100 other buildings including The St. Louis Union Station. He was also one of the architects of the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair.
Furniture Brands International
In 1966, the building became Furniture Brands International, a factory that employed many people in the city of St. Louis. Furniture Brands International became one of the nation’s largest makers of home furniture.
National Register of Historic Places
In 1984, the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places for its significance as Roberts, Johnson and Rand International Shoe Company. The National Register of Historic Places recognizes structures, buildings and more to help create an understanding of the historical and cultural bases of the nation.
